LCA - Character design log

I haven't really made any design logs, but I suppose I shall now! As I come from a fashion design background, I figured I'd make a game with a fashion designer this round. And, well, as I've also always wanted a cute little boutique of my own, I decided to give him one!

This particular game was where I came up with the idea of making sprites that aren't so visual novel-based. The content is long-form, so I simply wanted a flat illustration as a banner at the top. For this, I made a base that extended only up to the chest - a bust if you will - and kept it in very easily-swapped layers. To save time, I simply flipped and mirrored aspects of the outfit and face.

I started first with doing guidelines to keep the mirroring process simple. One main line across, then everything else free-handed. Basically I didn't want my illustrations to look too symmetrical even if it was mirrored, so freehand on one side it is.

So yeah, once that was handled, all I needed to do was flip parts of the image over very easily. Hair is generally one aspect that I don't mirror, since I like my hairstyles a little bit unruly!

The skin-tones are kept on different layers as well, all with masking enabled. That sort of thing makes it for easy switching.

It's only after that that I finished up with the whole look. Each character has its own look and set. For this game it's from the standard Victorian male set, which comes with easily-adjustable clothes. All I have to do is add different prints to the jackets, collars or shirts and voila! Whole new look!

If you're wondering why I didn't call Adam's design a standard set, it's mostly because at that point, I'd wanted him to look slightly different. I've always had a thing for personalities that don't really match a person's face, so I gave him a more angelic look to go with the whole act he's putting up.

Little did I know that I'd grow very fond of his cute base! So I'm definitely reusing it for other characters in the future! They'll probably have unexpectedly tough personalities too. I mean, even Honey from Ouran has scary karate chops! Come to think of it, Honey and Tamaki have always been two of my top fictional role models. I grew up selectively mute as a child, so I used Tamaki as a goal to help train myself to become braver and more approachable in general - and nowadays I'm invited to parties, competitions and events! I even get to help out and host some of my own. What a dream!

So anyway, here's a main character who's a man with his own steady business, and he knows how to have fun! He's a bit like all of us, so I like to think. I hope you'll like Adam as much as I like him!
