Music Box I: Postmortem

Well hello! Here's yet another postmortem log from me - I'm slowly getting used to these things!

To be honest, I wasn't exactly expecting to make a linear visual novel of my own. I'd been very used to making branches when it came to visual novels, but somehow, I felt that a kinetic novel suited this particular story a little more.

The other thing I hadn't expected to do was use a Liszt reference. Initially, I'd been watching a documentary on Netflix about a little girl who was haunting a music box. The overarching tune was that of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake - a tune I'd been in love with for the longest time. Tchaikovsky's one of my favorites too.

But as I was searching for a music box tinkle, I stumbled upon Liebestraum, which inspired a whole new take to the story. The initial draft was a spooky story about a drowned guy going yandere on a living guy (I'd never made stories featuring yanderes before, you see, and wanted to experiment with making one) but somehow, the story mellowed down into a rather sweet one.

Florian and Randy's story ended up being one about love that only got a chance after a tragedy. I remember another Netflix documentary with a comment on how tragedy can also bring forth beauty. It did make me ponder quite a bit, so I'd decided to incorporate the concept that beautiful moments can be fleeting.

Randy and Florian may not have much time together, but the world isn't always compassionate nor does it give many of us a "what if" in life. However, they did enjoy those little moments they had together.

At any rate, the other thing I did want to do differently was incorporate a sense of youth in the kinetic novel. I could have written full "haha"s, but somehow that didn't fit at all! These two are goofballs - and goofballs they'll stay! I wouldn't have designed good ol' Randy and Dennis any other way!

Cheers!
